Nintendo Switch Repair — Joy-Con Drift, Cracked Screens, Charging Ports and Every Switch Issue Fixed

A reliable Nintendo Switch repair service needs to handle a console unlike any other on the market. The Switch is a hybrid device — it works as a handheld with a built-in screen, then docks to a TV using an HDMI port hidden inside the dock. Unlike a PlayStation or Xbox, the Switch has detachable Joy-Con controllers that slide on and off, a charging port that wears out from being docked and undocked dozens of times each week, a cartridge slot for physical games, and a built-in kickstand for tabletop play. Each of these unique features creates its own specific failure mode. At PC Mobile, our technicians repair every Nintendo Switch model in current use — the original Switch (LCD screen), Switch OLED, Switch Lite, and the new Nintendo Switch 2 launched in 2025. We fix Joy-Con drift permanently, replace cracked screens, repair charging ports, and resolve dock issues. Every Switch repair comes with our 30-day warranty on parts and labor.

What Makes Nintendo Switch Repair Different From Other Consoles

The Switch is the only console that needs a repair shop willing to work on tiny portable hardware as well as console-grade electronics. Here is what sets it apart.

Joy-Con Drift — The Nintendo-Exclusive Defect Nintendo No Longer Fixes For Free

Silicon VS Intel

Joy-Con drift is one of the most well-known console defects in gaming history. The analog stick on a Joy-Con starts registering input even when you are not touching it — your character walks on its own, the menu cursor drifts, and the game becomes unplayable. The cause is specific to Nintendo’s Joy-Con design: a small carbon contact pad inside the joystick wears down with use, causing the sensor to misread “no input” as “slight movement.” Nintendo ran a free Joy-Con repair program for several years under legal pressure, but that program has ended or been severely restricted for most users. Every Joy-Con drift problem now needs a paid solution — and most repair shops do not handle it correctly. They calibrate the stick (which works for a few days) instead of replacing the joystick module (which is the permanent fix). We replace the joystick module entirely. The drift does not come back.

The Charging Port Is the Most Common Switch Failure

Display accuracy

This surprises most Switch owners. The number one Nintendo Switch repair we handle is not screen replacement — it is charging port repair. The reason is mechanical wear. Every time you slide your Switch into the dock, the charging port connects with the dock’s USB-C contacts. Every time you take it back out, those contacts disengage. Multiply that by daily use over two or three years, and the charging port inside the Switch becomes loose, bent, or damaged. The Switch will then only charge at certain angles, charge intermittently, or stop charging entirely. We replace Switch charging ports on all four models — original Switch, OLED, Lite, and Switch 2.

The Only Console With a Built-In Screen

newer

Unlike a PS5 or Xbox that connects to your TV, the Nintendo Switch has its own LCD or OLED display built directly into the console. This means screen damage is part of normal Switch ownership — drops, kids using it on the floor, screens getting cracked from being stuffed into backpacks alongside textbooks. We replace cracked Switch screens on all four model variants. Each screen type has its own cost: the original Switch uses a 6.2-inch LCD, the Switch Lite uses a 5.5-inch LCD, the Switch OLED uses a 7-inch OLED panel (the most expensive to replace), and the new Switch 2 uses a larger LCD with HDR support.

Joy-Con Rails — A Connection Mechanism No Other Console Has

All iPhone models

The Joy-Con controllers slide onto the sides of the Switch using rail connectors that carry both the physical attachment and the data connection. Over years of attaching and detaching, these rail connectors can wear down — the Joy-Con feels loose, falls off during gameplay, or stops being recognized by the console. We repair both the rail connectors on the Joy-Con itself and the corresponding rail receptacles on the Switch. This is a Nintendo-exclusive repair that no PS5 or Xbox shop ever handles.

Dock Issues vs Console Issues — Diagnosing Which One Failed

Security

If your Switch will not display on your TV when docked, the problem could be the console, the dock, the HDMI cable, or your TV’s HDMI input. Many customers blame the console when the dock is actually the issue. The Nintendo Switch dock contains its own HDMI controller chip that can fail independently of the console. We diagnose both the dock and the console to identify which one needs repair before recommending a fix. In some cases, only the dock needs servicing — saving you the cost of a full console repair.

Nintendo Switch Repairs We Perform

01

Joy-Con Drift Permanent Fix

We replace the worn joystick module entirely — the only permanent solution to Joy-Con drift. Calibration software workarounds and contact-pad cleaning tricks may help for a few days or weeks, but the underlying issue returns because the contact pad continues to wear. Module replacement gives you a Joy-Con that performs like new. Most Joy-Con drift repairs take 30 to 45 minutes per Joy-Con. We repair both the left and right Joy-Con on all Switch generations, including Switch 2 Joy-Con. We also repair Pro Controller stick drift using the same module replacement approach.

02

Cracked Screen Replacement

Nintendo Switch screen repair is the second most common Switch repair we handle. We replace cracked LCD panels on the original Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch 2 — and OLED panels on the Switch OLED. Each model uses a different screen with different cost. The OLED Switch screen costs more because the OLED panel is more expensive than LCD. We test the touchscreen response, color accuracy, and brightness uniformity on every replacement before returning the console. Most Switch screen replacements take 45 to 75 minutes.

03

Charging Port Repair

Worn USB-C charging ports are the number-one Switch failure. We replace the charging port assembly with a new component that restores reliable docking and undocking. This repair is one of our fastest — typically completed in 45 to 60 minutes. “Nintendo Switch charging port repair” is one of the easier-ranking keywords in this category, and many Switch owners come to us after their console stopped charging properly.

04

Battery Replacement

The original Switch launched in 2017, and most early-adopter consoles are now seven-plus years old. Switch batteries that originally lasted 4 to 6 hours now drain in 90 minutes. We replace the lithium-ion battery in all Switch models — original, OLED, Lite, and Switch 2 — restoring full handheld playtime. Battery replacement also addresses unexpected shutdowns at higher charge percentages, which is a sign of degraded cells. Most Switch battery replacements take 45 to 60 minutes.

05

Joy-Con Rail Connector Repair

If your Joy-Con falls off the Switch during gameplay, will not slide onto the rails properly, or is not being recognized when attached, the rail connector has worn out. We repair both sides — the Joy-Con’s rail and the console’s rail receptacle. This repair is unique to the Switch.

06

Fan Cleaning and Thermal Service

Switch consoles run a small internal fan to cool the Tegra processor during gameplay. Over years of use, dust accumulates on the fan blades and heatsink, restricting airflow. The Switch then runs louder, gets hot during docked gaming sessions, or shuts down during demanding games. Our thermal service includes opening the console, cleaning the fan and heatsink, replacing the thermal paste between the processor and heatsink, and reassembling. This service often extends a Switch’s useful life by years.

07

Dock and HDMI Repair

If your Switch will not display on your TV when docked but works fine in handheld mode, the dock is likely the problem. We diagnose and repair Nintendo Switch dock HDMI issues, dock charging issues, and worn dock USB-C connectors. In many cases, dock repair is significantly cheaper than full console repair.

08

Switch Won't Turn On — Diagnostics

A Switch that will not power on could be a dead battery, a worn charging port preventing the battery from charging, a failed power management chip, or liquid damage. We perform a full diagnostic to identify the actual cause before recommending any repair. Many “dead Switch” cases turn out to be fixable charging port problems, not console failures.

Nintendo Switch Models We Repair — All Generations

Nintendo Switch 2 (Launched 2025 — Newest Model)

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in 2025 with a larger display, HDR support, and upgraded Joy-Con 2 controllers. As an early-adopter device, Switch 2 owners are now starting to see their first repair issues — cracked screens from drops, charging port wear, and Joy-Con 2 problems. We repair Switch 2 cracked screens, Joy-Con 2 drift and rail issues, and charging ports. Almost no local repair shop has Switch 2 content yet — if you are searching for Switch 2 repair, we are one of the few options in Loudoun County.

Nintendo Switch OLED (Premium Model)

The OLED Switch released in 2021 features a 7-inch OLED display, improved kickstand, and better dock with built-in Ethernet. The OLED screen is the most expensive Switch screen to replace because of the OLED panel cost. We repair OLED Switch screen damage, Joy-Con drift, charging port wear, and battery degradation.

Original Nintendo Switch (Highest Volume)

The original Nintendo Switch is by far our highest-volume console repair. It launched in 2017, with a battery-improved revision in 2019. Both versions have the same external design and use the same parts. After seven-plus years on the market, virtually every original Switch we see needs at least one repair — Joy-Con drift, charging port wear, screen cracks, or battery replacement are most common.

Nintendo Switch Lite (Handheld Only)

The Switch Lite is a handheld-only version with built-in controls — no detachable Joy-Con. It is significantly smaller and lighter, making it popular with kids and travelers. Stick drift on the built-in controls is common (essentially the same Joy-Con drift issue, but built into the console). Cracked screens and charging port wear are also frequent. Switch Lite repairs are slightly different because the controls are integrated.

Best Buy, GameStop, uBreakiFix, or PC Mobile — Where to Get Your Switch Fixed

Best Buy / Geek Squad

Geek Squad does not repair Nintendo Switches in-store. They send Switches to Nintendo’s repair facility for service, which typically takes three to five weeks. For a kid’s Christmas present that broke, a teenager’s birthday gift, or a daily-use console, that wait time is unacceptable. We fix it the same day.

GameStop

GameStop offers limited Switch repair through their PowerUp Rewards Pro program, but most service is mail-in to a third-party facility. Turnaround is typically two to four weeks. Pricing is comparable to ours, but the wait time is the deciding factor for most customers.

uBreakiFix (Asurion)

Unlike Best Buy, uBreakiFix actually does repair Nintendo Switches in their stores. We respect that — they are a legitimate alternative. The decision usually comes down to availability and pricing for your specific repair. We compete on same-day service, competitive pricing, and a 30-day warranty backed by 265+ local Google reviews.

Nintendo Direct Repair

Nintendo accepts mail-in repairs through their official program. Pricing is typically higher than independent repair, and turnaround is two to four weeks. Nintendo’s free Joy-Con drift program has largely ended for most users — paid repair through Nintendo costs roughly the same as paid repair through us, but with a multi-week wait. We deliver same-day, in-shop service.

Frequently Asked Questions About Nintendo Switch Repair

We replace the joystick module entirely. The drift is caused by a worn carbon contact pad inside the joystick that cannot be repaired through software calibration or cleaning. Module replacement gives you a Joy-Con that responds correctly with no drift. Most Joy-Con drift repairs take 30 to 45 minutes per Joy-Con and last as long as the original.

Almost always, yes. Switch charging port wear is the number-one Switch repair we perform. The USB-C port inside the Switch loosens from constant docking and undocking, causing intermittent or no charging. We replace the charging port assembly with a new component. This repair typically takes 45 to 60 minutes and is one of the most affordable Switch repairs.

Yes. We replace OLED Switch screens with quality replacement panels that match the original brightness and color. OLED screen replacement costs more than original Switch LCD replacement because of the higher panel cost — we are transparent about this upfront. Most OLED screen replacements take 60 to 90 minutes.

Yes. We repair Switch 2 cracked screens, Joy-Con 2 drift and rail issues, and charging ports. The Switch 2 launched in 2025, and we are one of the few local repair shops with Switch 2 expertise this early in the product lifecycle.

The Switch Lite has integrated controls instead of detachable Joy-Con. Stick drift on the Lite affects the built-in controls — repair requires opening the console rather than just replacing a Joy-Con module. Lite screens are smaller (5.5-inch vs 6.2-inch), so screen replacement parts and cost are different. Charging port repair process is similar on both models.

Some people do — there are repair kits and tutorials available. The challenge is that Switch internals are tightly packed, ribbon cables are easy to tear, and tri-wing screws require specific tools. If you have electronics repair experience and patience, DIY can work. If not, you risk damaging the console further. We are happy to help even if a DIY attempt did not go as planned.

Largely no. Nintendo offered free Joy-Con drift repair under legal pressure for several years, but the program has ended or been severely restricted for most users. Most current drift cases require paid repair. Our pricing is comparable to Nintendo’s paid repair, but we offer same-day service instead of multi-week mail-in.

No. Walk-ins are welcome during business hours. Bring your Switch, both Joy-Con (or Pro Controller if you use one), and the dock if the issue involves docked play. Call (703) 594-9339 or fill out our online quote form for a free estimate before visiting.
