PlayStation Repair — PS5, PS4, DualSense and Every Sony Console Fixed Same Day

A reliable PlayStation repair service needs to handle two generations of Sony home consoles plus the controllers, the optional disc drives, and even the retro models that collectors still play every weekend. The PlayStation 5 launched in 2020 and most consoles are now past their two-year warranty. The PlayStation 4 ran from 2013 to 2020 and millions of units are still in active use. Both generations share certain common problems — failed HDMI ports, disc drive issues, overheating from dried thermal paste, controller stick drift — but each generation also has its own unique failure modes. The PS5 Blue Light of Death is different from the PS4 Yellow Light of Death. The DualSense controller has adaptive triggers and haptic motors that the older DualShock 4 does not. At PC Mobile, our technicians repair every PlayStation in current use — PS5, PS5 Slim, PS5 Digital, PS5 Pro, PS4 Pro, PS4 Slim, PS4 — plus the new PlayStation Portal and even retro Sony consoles like PS3, PS2, PSP, and PS Vita. Every PlayStation repair comes with our 30-day warranty on parts and labor.

What Makes PlayStation Repair Different From Other Console Repair

The PlayStation is a Sony home console with its own set of repair challenges. Here is what sets it apart from a Nintendo Switch or Xbox.

HDMI Port Failure Is the #1 PlayStation Repair

Silicon VS Intel

This is the single most common PlayStation hardware issue we handle across all generations. The HDMI port on a PS5 or PS4 is soldered directly to the console’s motherboard with tiny solder pins. When you move the console with the HDMI cable still connected, when a controller cable trips someone in front of the TV, or when the cable is forced in at an angle, those solder joints crack or the port itself bends inside. The result is a panic-inducing “no signal” message on your TV, video that flickers or disappears at certain cable angles, or a console that connects but shows scrambled colors. Repairing a PlayStation HDMI port requires micro-soldering — desoldering the damaged port under magnification, cleaning the solder pads on the motherboard, and soldering a new port with precision equipment. This is a specialized skill that most general repair shops do not perform. We do this repair regularly on both PS5 and PS4.

Blue Light of Death (PS5) and Yellow Light of Death (PS4)

Display accuracy

Sony consoles use power LED color codes to signal hardware failure. The PS5 Blue Light of Death (BLOD) is a pulsing blue light followed by automatic shutdown — typically caused by a power supply problem, a motherboard fault, or a fan failure that triggers thermal protection. The PS4 Yellow Light of Death (YLOD) is a yellow flash followed by three beeps and shutdown — almost always a motherboard or APU thermal failure. These are PlayStation-exclusive failure indicators. Nintendo Switch does not have BLOD. Xbox uses different LED codes. We diagnose both BLOD and YLOD systematically — testing the power supply first, then thermal management, then motherboard components — to identify the actual failed part rather than guessing.

Disc Drive Mechanisms — Especially the PS5 Slim Detachable Drive

newer

PS5, PS5 Pro, PS4, PS4 Slim, and PS4 Pro all have physical Blu-ray disc drives with mechanical components — a laser assembly that reads discs, a motor that spins them, a tray or slot mechanism that accepts and ejects them. These mechanical parts wear with use. Symptoms include discs not being read, grinding noises during loading, discs being ejected on their own, or the console not recognizing that a disc has been inserted. The PS5 Slim brought a new wrinkle to PlayStation repair: a detachable disc drive that connects via a USB-C cable on the back of the console. The detachable drive can fail independently of the console — and Sony pairs each drive to a specific PS5 Slim, which causes activation issues if you swap drives. We handle disc drive repair on all PlayStation generations and understand the PS5 Slim pairing requirements.

DualSense Controller — Adaptive Triggers and Haptic Motors

All iPhone models

The PS5 DualSense controller is significantly more complex internally than older PlayStation controllers. It has adaptive triggers (motors that resist your finger pull based on what is happening in the game), advanced haptic feedback motors instead of basic rumble, a built-in microphone, a touchpad, and the same analog sticks that develop drift over time. This complexity creates more potential failure points. We repair DualSense stick drift, broken adaptive triggers, failed haptic motors, broken touchpads, and battery degradation. The DualShock 4 (PS4 controller) is simpler but still has stick drift, broken bumper buttons, and Bluetooth pairing issues we handle.

Cooling System Wear From Sustained Gaming

Security

PlayStation consoles run their processors at near-maximum capacity for hours during gaming sessions — sometimes the entire weekend during a binge play of a new release. This sustained thermal load dries out the thermal paste between the APU (the main processor chip) and the heatsink faster than in most other devices. When the thermal paste degrades, the console runs hotter, the fan ramps up to a jet-engine roar, performance drops (frame rate stutters), and eventually the console shuts down to protect itself. PS5 fan noise is a common complaint we hear. Our thermal service includes opening the console, cleaning the fan and heatsink, replacing the dried thermal paste with high-quality compound, and testing under load.

Best Buy and GameStop Do Not Repair PlayStations In-Store

Security

This catches most PlayStation owners off-guard. Geek Squad does not perform PlayStation hardware repairs at Best Buy locations. They send PlayStations to Sony for service through the manufacturer mail-in program, which typically takes four to eight weeks. GameStop has limited Sony repair options through partner facilities — also weeks. We repair PlayStations in our own shop, usually the same day you bring it in.

PlayStation Repairs We Perform

01

HDMI Port Micro-Soldering (PS5 and PS4)

PlayStation HDMI port repair is our most technically demanding console repair and our most common PlayStation service. The damaged HDMI port is desoldered from the motherboard under magnification, the solder pads are cleaned, and a new port is precisely soldered into place. We test the video output at multiple resolutions (1080p, 4K, HDR) and confirm full compatibility with various HDMI cables before returning the console. Most HDMI port repairs take one to two hours.

02

Blue Light of Death and Yellow Light of Death Diagnosis

BLOD on a PS5 and YLOD on a PS4 are both symptom codes — not a specific repair. The actual fix depends on what failed. We perform systematic diagnosis: testing power supply voltages, checking the fan and thermal system, inspecting the motherboard for visible damage, and reading any internal error codes. Once we identify the actual failed component, we repair or replace it. In many cases, BLOD or YLOD is caused by a single repairable component (often the fan or power supply) — significantly cheaper than a full motherboard replacement.

03

Disc Drive Repair (PS5, PS5 Pro, PS4)

Disc drive failure shows up as discs not being read, grinding sounds during loading, random disc ejection, or “Cannot Read Disc” error messages. We repair disc drive laser assemblies, replace failed disc spindle motors, and fix loading mechanism issues. For PS5 Slim consoles with detachable disc drives, we also handle drive-to-console pairing problems. Most disc drive repairs take one to two hours.

04

DualSense and DualShock 4 Controller Repair

Stick drift on PlayStation controllers shows up as the camera moving on its own, your character walking when you are not touching the stick, or menu cursors drifting. Adaptive trigger failures (PS5 DualSense only) cause the L2 or R2 button to feel mushy, stuck, or unresponsive. Haptic motor failures cause weak or absent rumble feedback. We replace joystick modules, adaptive trigger mechanisms, haptic motors, batteries, and touchpads on all PlayStation controllers. Most controller repairs take 30 to 60 minutes.

05

Thermal Service and Fan Cleaning

If your PlayStation runs unusually loud, shuts down during demanding games, shows frame rate drops, or feels hot to the touch, the cooling system needs attention. Our thermal service includes opening the console, removing accumulated dust from the fan blades and heatsink fins, replacing the dried thermal paste between the APU and heatsink with high-quality compound, and reassembling. We test the console under gaming load to verify proper cooling before returning it. This service often extends a console’s useful life by several years.

06

Power Supply and "Won't Turn On" Diagnosis

A PlayStation that shows no response when you press the power button could have a failed internal power supply, a short circuit on the motherboard, a failed power button assembly, or a more serious motherboard issue. We perform systematic power diagnosis to identify the root cause before recommending repair. Power supply replacement is significantly cheaper than full motherboard replacement, and many “dead PlayStations” turn out to be PSU failures we can fix.

07

USB Port Replacement

The USB-A and USB-C ports on a PlayStation get heavy use — controller charging, headset connections, external storage drives. Worn USB ports can stop recognizing devices, charge controllers intermittently, or fail completely. We replace USB ports on PS5, PS5 Slim, and PS4 consoles.

08

Retro PlayStation Repair (PS3, PS2, PSP, PS Vita)

We are one of the few repair shops in Loudoun County that still services retro PlayStation hardware. PS3 disc drive failure is the most common retro repair we see — collectors with pristine PS3 game libraries who want their console working for another decade. We also repair PS2 disc drives, PSP screens and batteries, and PS Vita screens, batteries, charging ports, and joystick drift. Retro Sony hardware repair is a specialty service for collectors who value working hardware over emulation.

PlayStation Models We Repair — Every Generation

PlayStation 5 Family (Current Generation)

The PS5 launched in 2020 and the PS5 Slim followed in 2023 with a smaller form factor and detachable disc drive. The PS5 Pro arrived in 2024 with upgraded GPU performance for high-end gaming. We repair all four PS5 variants. HDMI port damage is the most common PS5 repair we see, followed by overheating from dust buildup and DualSense controller drift.

PlayStation 4 Family (Still Heavily Used)

The PS4 line ran from 2013 to 2020. Millions of consoles are still in active use — these are out-of-warranty consoles at peak repair age. Yellow Light of Death, HDMI port damage, disc drive failure, and DualShock 4 controller drift are our most common PS4 repairs.

PlayStation Portal (New Remote Play Device)

The PlayStation Portal is Sony’s handheld remote play device that streams games from your PS5 over Wi-Fi. As an early-adopter product, Portal repair is an emerging service. We handle Portal screen damage, charging port wear, and Wi-Fi connectivity issues.

Surface Book (Legacy)

The PlayStation Portal is Sony’s handheld remote play device that streams games from your PS5 over Wi-Fi. As an early-adopter product, Portal repair is an emerging service. We handle Portal screen damage, charging port wear, and Wi-Fi connectivity issues.

Retro PlayStation (Collector Market)

We repair retro Sony hardware that most modern repair shops refuse to touch. PS3 disc drive failure is the most common retro repair. PS Vita and PSP repairs include screen replacement, battery swap, charging port repair, and joystick drift fix. Parts availability for retro hardware varies — call us first to confirm availability for your specific model and issue.

Best Buy, GameStop, Sony Direct, or PC Mobile — Where to Get Your PlayStation Fixed

Best Buy / Geek Squad

Geek Squad does not repair PlayStations in-store. They send PlayStations to Sony for service through the manufacturer mail-in program, which typically takes four to eight weeks. For a PS5 that is your daily entertainment device, those weeks are unacceptable. We repair PlayStations in our shop, usually the same day.

GameStop

GameStop offers limited PlayStation repair through partner facilities, typically through mail-in service. Turnaround is usually two to five weeks. Pricing is comparable to ours, but the wait time is the deciding factor for most customers.

Sony Direct Repair

Sony accepts mail-in repairs through their official PlayStation Service program. Pricing for out-of-warranty repair is typically higher than independent repair, and turnaround is four to eight weeks. Sony’s warranty repair (if you are still covered) is free but takes the same time. Out-of-warranty Sony repair costs roughly the same as we charge — but we deliver same-day service instead of multi-week mail-in.

Why Choose PC Mobile

Same-day service on most repairs. Free diagnostics. 30-day warranty on parts and labor. 265+ Google reviews. Local Sterling shop — your console never leaves Loudoun County. We service every PlayStation generation including retro hardware most other shops refuse.

Frequently Asked Questions About PlayStation Repair

In most cases, yes. PlayStation HDMI port failure is the single most common hardware repair we perform. If you see “no signal” on your TV but the console powers on (you hear the fan and see the power LED), the HDMI port is almost certainly the issue. We replace the damaged port through micro-soldering and test video output before returning the console. Most HDMI repairs are completed same day.

The PS5 Blue Light of Death (BLOD) is a pulsing blue power LED followed by automatic shutdown. It indicates a hardware fault — typically the power supply, the cooling fan, or the motherboard. We diagnose the actual failed component and repair or replace it. Many BLOD cases are caused by single repairable parts (often the fan or PSU) — significantly cheaper than full motherboard replacement.

The PS4 YLOD is a yellow LED flash followed by three beeps and shutdown. It almost always indicates a thermal failure on the motherboard or APU — usually caused by years of dried thermal paste and dust buildup that allowed the processor to overheat repeatedly. We perform thermal restoration and motherboard diagnosis. Some YLOD consoles can be saved with reflow and thermal repair; others require motherboard replacement. We give you an honest assessment before any work.

Yes. We replace the joystick module entirely — the only permanent fix for stick drift. Calibration software workarounds may help temporarily but the underlying mechanical wear continues. Module replacement gives you a controller that responds correctly with no drift. We also repair adaptive triggers, haptic motors, and batteries on DualSense controllers. Most controller repairs take 30 to 60 minutes.

Neither does in-store PlayStation repair. Best Buy / Geek Squad sends PlayStations to Sony for mail-in service — four to eight weeks. GameStop offers limited mail-in service through partner facilities — two to five weeks. We repair PlayStations in our shop, usually the same day you bring it in.

Yes. The PS5 Slim’s detachable disc drive can fail independently of the console, and Sony pairs each drive to a specific console — which can cause activation issues if drives are swapped. We handle PS5 Slim disc drive repair, console-side connector repair, and drive-to-console pairing problems.

Yes. We are one of the few repair shops in Loudoun County that still services retro Sony hardware. PS3 disc drive failure, PS2 disc drive issues, PSP screens and batteries, and PS Vita repairs are all services we provide. Parts availability varies — call first to confirm we have parts for your specific model.
