Signs You Need Phone Back Glass Repair
The back of your phone is glass on every modern model. Glass that cracks. Here is how you tell when to bring it in for a real repair.
Spider-Web Cracks That Cover the Back
Long cracks branching out across the back tell you the impact was hard. Touch still works, but the cracks will spread every time you handle the phone. Glass dust also gets inside the camera unit over time.
Loose Glass Shards Falling Off
Once shards start to fall out, the inside of your phone is exposed to dust and dirt. The phone becomes a safety risk to handle. Tape is a short-term band-aid, not a real fix.
Wireless Charging No Longer Works
A cracked back glass can break the wireless charging coil that sits right under it. You set the phone on the wireless pad and nothing happens. A proper back glass repair restores wireless charging the same day.
MagSafe Magnets No Longer Hold
On iPhone 12 and newer, the MagSafe magnets sit under the back glass. A bad drop can push them out of place. Your car mount slips. Your MagSafe wallet falls off. The fix is to replace the glass and reseat the magnets.
The Phone Is No Longer Water Resistant
Cracked back glass breaks the water-resistance seal that runs around the edge of the phone. Even small splashes can get inside. Fix the back glass before water damage starts.
The Camera Lens Cover Is Cracked Too
The camera lens cover sits inside the back glass area on most phones. One bad drop often cracks both at once. We replace the back glass and the camera lens cover in one bundled repair if you need both.
What Causes Phone Back Glass Damage
The back of your phone takes more drops than people realize. Here is what we see most often at our Sterling shop.
Face-Up Drops on Hard Floors
A phone that lands face-up cracks the back glass first. Tile, concrete, and hardwood are the worst landing spots. The camera bump sticks out and takes the full impact along with the rest of the glass.
Sitting on the Phone in a Back Pocket
Sit down with a phone in your back pocket and the glass bends with your body. Most cracks start at the camera bump and spread outward in waves. People never see this coming until they pull the phone out.
Pocket Sharing With Keys and Coins
Keys and coins in the same pocket as a phone scratch and chip the back over time. Light scratches turn into deep gouges. Deep gouges turn into full cracks when the phone gets bumped or dropped.
Cases Off for “Just a Minute”
Many users take the case off to clean it, then forget to put it back on. The very next drop ends in a cracked back. We add a fresh case recommendation to most repairs.
Thermal Stress in Summer Cars
A phone left on a hot dashboard expands in the heat. Bring it into a cold car and it can crack on its own. The glass and the metal frame change size at different rates. We see this most often during Virginia summers.
What to Do First —
Before You Bring It In
You do not need to rush a back glass repair the way you rush a water damage case. But these steps protect your phone and your fingers while you wait for the appointment.
Take a Photo of the Damage With Another Phone
Send it to us. We can give you a fair quote from the image before you drive over to the shop. This saves you a trip if you are just comparing prices.
Cover the Cracks With Clear Packing Tape
This stops more glass from falling out and protects your fingers when you handle the phone. It is a short-term fix, but it works until you walk in.
Stop Using Wireless Charging
A cracked back glass plus a wireless charger builds up heat in the wrong spots. This can damage the battery over time. Use a wired cable until the repair is done.
Stop Attaching MagSafe Accessories
Magnets pulling on broken glass spread the cracks. Use a regular wired cable and a grip case until the repair is complete.
Keep the Phone Away From Water
A cracked back glass has no water seal anymore. Even rain or a kitchen splash can get water inside the phone. Keep it dry until the repair.

Most back glass repairs are done the same day in 60 to 120 minutes. No appointment needed. Free assessment before any paid work.
What NOT to Do
The wrong move can turn a $129 repair into a $400 logic-board repair. Skip these home tricks that we see far too often.
Real back glass repair requires a laser to remove the factory adhesive. Heat guns and razor blades from a kit bend the frame, scratch the inside, and damage internal parts. The kit costs $30 — the repair you need afterward costs $300.
Too much heat melts the screen adhesive and warps the metal frame. Once the frame is warped, the phone is no longer fixable.
Heat builds up between the charger and the broken glass. This can damage the battery and the wireless charging coil over time.
Tape lets glass dust into the camera lens and the speakers. The longer you wait, the more inside parts go bad. A small crack today is the cheapest time to fix it.
A cracked back has no water seal. Water damage on top of back glass damage doubles the repair cost in one moment.
Free assessment first — we check the glass, the frame, the MagSafe, and the camera lens. Fixed-price quote before any paid work. Most repairs done same day in 60 to 120 minutes.
Our Phone Back Glass
Repair Process — Step by Step
Back glass repair takes more skill than a screen swap. The factory uses a strong adhesive that needs a laser to remove cleanly. Our process is different from cheap shops.
Apple Will Not Repair Your Back Glass —
Here Is Why It Matters
If you take a cracked back glass iPhone to Apple, they will not fix it. Here is the honest comparison.
- Replaces the whole phone
- $400 to $600 cost
- New serial number
- Battery health resets
- You lose your old phone
- No back-glass-only option
- Replaces only the back glass
- A fraction of Apple’s price
- Same phone, same serial number
- Same battery health
- Same photos, apps, Face ID
- CO2 laser process — safe
We replace just the back glass at a fraction of the cost. Same day. Same phone. Premium-quality parts. 30-day warranty.

What Determines
Phone Back Glass Repair Cost
Back glass repair cost depends on more than just the brand. Here is what shapes the final price on your quote — always given to you in writing before we start.
Phone Model and Glass Size
iPhone Pro Max and Samsung Ultra models have larger back glass that costs more to replace. Older iPhone 8 and iPhone X back glass parts are cheaper. We have parts in stock for most current and older models.
Camera Lens Cover Bundle
Most phones have the camera lens cover sitting inside the back glass area. If both are cracked, we bundle the repair at a lower combined cost than two separate jobs. See our camera repair page if only the lens cover is cracked.
MagSafe Magnets and Wireless Charging Coil
On iPhone 12 and newer, the MagSafe magnets and the wireless charging coil sit directly under the back glass. If either is damaged, the repair cost includes that part. We test both during the free assessment.
Color Match
We match the factory color on most models. Rare or limited-edition colors take a bit longer to source and may carry a small upcharge. We tell you up front before we order any part.
