Samsung markets IP68 water resistance hard on every flagship Galaxy phone. Here is what that actually covers, in plain language.
IP68 was never a lifetime promise. The adhesive seals around the screen, back glass, and charging port degrade over time. After two years of normal use, the seals are no longer airtight. The phone is no longer truly IP68 even if Samsung said so on day one.
Salt water destroys IP68 seals. Pool chlorine destroys IP68 seals. Hot drinks, shampoo, soap, and sweat all damage the rubber gaskets. Even bottled water and tap water have minerals that leave residue inside the phone.
Read the fine print on Samsung standard one-year warranty. Liquid damage is NOT covered, even on IP68-rated phones. Samsung Care+ may cover some accidental damage for $99 per claim, but only if you have active coverage.

Galaxy S7 was the first IP68 Samsung phone. Every flagship since (S8 through S25 including all Plus and Ultra variants) has IP68 protection. The rating degrades with age and use as described above. We repair every model.
Galaxy Note 5 through Note 20 (Ultra included) all carry IP68. Samsung stopped making new Note phones after Note 20 but plenty are still in service.
Galaxy A14, A15, A23, A35 typically have NO water resistance rating at all. The A52, A53, A54, A55 have IP67 (lighter rating, splash-resistant only). Many owners assume it is waterproof. That assumption causes real damage.
Samsung foldables carry IPX8 starting from Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5. The “X” means dust-protection was not tested. The bigger issue: the hinge area is the weakest point. Water vapor travels through the hinge to the inner flexible OLED display.

Samsung phones display this exact warning when humidity in the USB-C port crosses a threshold. The phone blocks charging until the port dries. If the warning stays on for more than 12 to 24 hours, water is trapped inside.
Samsung AMOLED panels react to water differently. Pink blooms, green tints, or purple patches after liquid exposure usually mean water reached the OLED layer. Screen replacement plus logic board cleaning is the standard repair.
Touch input fails completely or registers ghost taps you did not make. Water on the digitizer layer. Common after Galaxy A series water exposure because the A line typically lacks the seal quality of the flagship Galaxy S.
Water inside the speaker grille distorts the sound. Sometimes resolves naturally as the water evaporates. Sometimes leaves mineral residue that permanently affects audio quality.
Galaxy S10 and newer use an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor under the screen. Water trapped between the glass and sensor blocks the ultrasonic waves. Recalibration usually restores function after we dry and clean the area.
Samsung phones have a small LDI sticker inside the SIM tray slot. It starts white. After liquid contact, it turns pink or red. Samsung and uBreakiFix check this first when assessing warranty claims.
Open Samsung Members, go to Diagnostics, run the full hardware test. After water damage, sensors like the gyroscope, proximity sensor, or microphone often fail this test.
Samsung water resistance technology differs from other phones in ways that matter during a repair.
The Galaxy A14, A15, and most A20-series phones have NO water resistance rating. The A52 and newer A-series have IP67 (splash only, not submersion). Customers often assume all Samsung phones share the flagship IP68. They do not.
The hinge area on a Z Flip or Z Fold has the lowest seal quality on the whole phone. Water vapor travels through the hinge into the inner flexible OLED display. The outer body IPX8 rating does not protect the inner display from this kind of damage.
Samsung places the Liquid Damage Indicator inside the SIM tray slot. Apple places theirs in the SIM tray on iPhones up to iPhone 14, then inside the device on iPhone 15+. The location difference means even checking your own LDI is a Samsung-specific skill.
Samsung Members can run an internal moisture and sensor diagnostic. iPhone does not have an equivalent built-in diagnostic available to end users. We use Samsung Members as part of our free diagnostic for every Galaxy water damage case.
The Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold need their own approach for water damage because the hinge is unlike any other phone design.
Even with the phone closed and the IPX8 rating active, the hinge has small mechanical gaps that allow water vapor to enter when the phone gets wet. Vapor reaches the inner flexible OLED panel where it condenses and damages the plastic substrate.
Foldable water damage repair requires opening both halves of the phone, drying the hinge mechanism, replacing damaged inner OLED if affected, and re-sealing the hinge with fresh adhesive. The job takes longer (3 to 4 hours typical).
Z Flip water damage runs $169 to $229. Z Fold with hinge area damage runs $199 to $249. These are the highest-cost water damage repairs in our shop because the parts and labor demands are both higher.
We check the LDI sticker, run Samsung Members hardware diagnostic, and inspect the logic board under microscope. Actual damage and actual quote before any paid work.
