Searching for phone diagnostic software? Maybe you want to test a used phone before buying it. Or your phone is acting up and you want to know what's wrong before you pay. We run pro phone diagnostic software every day at our Sterling shop, and we'll run a free diagnostic for any walk-in.
A proper diagnostic runs through every part of your phone in a few minutes. Here is what we test on the bench.
The battery is the part that wears out first on most phones. Pro tools read the real battery health percentage and the cycle count straight from the chip. Your iPhone Settings screen can show a wrong number on phones with aftermarket batteries. The chip itself does not lie.
We test every pixel for dead spots. We test touch in all four corners and the middle. We check Face ID sensors, the proximity sensor, and 3D Touch where it exists. A DIY app can show you a color test grid. It cannot read the screen controller chip the way our bench tools do.
The Settings app on your phone tells you if it sees a charger plugged in. Our software checks each individual pin in the port, the data lines, the power lines, and whether the cable itself is the problem. That is a different level of test.
Earpiece speaker, loud speaker, every microphone on the phone, and the silent switch on iPhone. We check them all. Most users do not realize their phone has up to four microphones. We test each one.
Front camera, rear camera, ultra-wide, telephoto, LiDAR, the flash, the gyroscope, accelerometer, compass, ambient light sensor. All checked. There are more sensors inside a modern phone than most people guess.
We test signal strength on both Wi-Fi and cellular, the Bluetooth radio, and the antenna performance. This one matters most after drops. A drop near the antenna line can cut signal strength in half without any other visible damage.
Pro tools read the actual flash storage health, not just the free space number you see in Settings. This matters on used phones where the previous owner did heavy use. We can tell you if the storage chip is near the end of its rewrite life.
You can run a few checks at home for free. But not all the checks. Here is what each option does well.
Apps like Phone Doctor Plus, AccuBattery, and TestM are honestly pretty good for the basics. They check touch response, GPS accuracy, color display, the gyroscope, and a handful of sensors. For free, that is a fair deal.
DIY apps run inside iOS or Android. They can only see what Apple or Google lets them see. Our bench tools talk to the chip directly. If your battery health shows 100 percent in Settings but the chip itself is worn out, only the bench tools catch the lie.
Detect aftermarket screens that do not pair properly. Read the True Tone chip on iPhones. Check whether Face ID has been locked. See if the Touch ID button was swapped. Confirm the battery is genuine. Look up the phone GSX status in Apple own database. No consumer app can do any of that.
Most people only think about diagnostics when something stops working. But there are a few other times when running one is worth it.
If you are buying from Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, eBay, or a friend, run a diagnostic before money changes hands. We do it free in the shop. Ten minutes can save you from buying a phone with bad battery health, hidden water damage, or an aftermarket screen.
A clean diagnostic report bumps your trade-in value. It also catches small problems you did not know about. Better to find them now than have a buyer return the phone later.
Sometimes a drop knocks something loose inside. Wi-Fi gets weaker. The gyroscope starts to drift. A camera lens shifts slightly off center. A diagnostic catches these before they get worse.
You should always know exactly what is broken before paying. We will not quote any repair without running the diagnostic first. If another shop quotes you a battery replacement without running a diagnostic, that is worth a second opinion.
We will not list every tool we use because some are paid trade tools. But here are the main categories and the names you can look up.
Apple GSX system, Samsung Members, and Google Pixel built-in diagnostic mode. These are the gold standard for each brand. Apple GSX in particular reads chip-level data that no consumer app can touch.
3uTools and iMazing run on a Mac or Windows PC and talk to the phone over a USB cable. They give us detailed reports we can print or email to you on the spot.
Both iPhone and Samsung have hidden test menus built into the phone itself. iPhone has a diagnostic mode that Apple support uses. Samsung phones open a hidden test menu when you dial *#0#. We use these as quick first-pass checks before plugging in.
For iPhone battery health, we cross-check using a tool called Battery Memo plus our bench reader. For Android storage health, we use dedicated reading tools. These tell us if a flash chip is near its rewrite limit and time is running out.
If you want to run some tests at home first, here are the apps we trust. None of these are sponsored. We just see them on customer phones often, and they are honest about what they find.
iOS and Android. The free version checks most sensors and outputs. Easy to use. Best all-around free option for both platforms.
Android only. The best free battery health app for Android. iOS does not let any app go this deep, which is why this one is Android-only.
Android. Walks you through every test one step at a time. Free version covers the basics. Easy to follow even if you have never run a diagnostic before.
Android. Shows the actual chip specs inside the phone. Useful when you are buying used and want to confirm the model is what the seller claims.
Mac only. Plugs into your iPhone over USB and reads detailed battery info. Best free iPhone battery checker if you own a Mac.
If any of these apps flag a problem, bring the phone in. We will confirm the issue with pro tools and quote the repair.
A diagnostic only matters if you act on it. Here is how to read the report and what to do next.
Good news. No repair needed. Save the report. It bumps your resale value when you sell or trade in later.
Apple and Samsung both recommend replacement at this point. See our phone battery replacement page.
See the specific issue page — cracked screen, camera, or charging port. We can usually fix any of these the same day.
See our speaker and microphone repair page. Often just needs a free cleaning before any paid repair is needed.
If the diagnostic shows tripped water sensors or corrosion patterns inside the phone, see our water damage repair page. Bring the phone in the same day. Corrosion gets worse every hour.
See our phone back glass repair page. Laser process. Same-day service.
